Zambia lowers 2026 election nomination fees as opposition field fragments

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced tiered nomination fees for the Aug. 13, 2026 general elections, reducing costs for youths, women and persons with disabilities. presidential candidates who are youths or disabled will pay K60,000, compared with K100,000 for older men and K80,000 for women. Parliamentary fees are set at K17,000 for male candidates, K14,000 for females, K10,500 for youths and K10,000 for disabled persons, with similar scaled fees for mayoral, council and municipal contests. ECZ said the voter register now stands at 8,786,300, with women comprising 53.1% of voters.

Meanwhile, more than 25 presidential aspirants have already paid their fees, creating a crowded ballot that analysts say dilutes opposition strength. Critics warn that fragmented opposition parties and personality‑driven campaigns could benefit incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema and the United Party for National Development, as vote‑splitting favors the incumbent under Zambia’s first‑past‑the‑post system.
