Zambia mining operations face scrutiny over pollution and community impacts

Mining operations in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province are facing scrutiny over environmental contamination and community impacts. A recent technology assessment in the Chingola District highlighted how the global demand for critical minerals—essential for digital technology and AI—is placing immense pressure on local populations. The report documented environmental contamination, health impacts, displacement from farmland, and inadequate compensation, noting that communities are often excluded from governance decisions and economic benefits.

In a related development, the Zambian government is investigating a chemical spill in the Kafue River allegedly linked to Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources. Local residents reported fish die-offs and water discoloration following a leak from a tailings leach plant and an overflow from a pollution control dam. While KCM has contested responsibility and called for a fact-based investigation, the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment are conducting tests for heavy metals and contaminants. The ministry has ordered KCM to perform a comprehensive assessment of its infrastructure to prevent further environmental risks.
