Zambia mourns football legend Freddie Mwila Senior

Zambia is mourning the death of football icon Freddie Mwila Senior, who passed away at the age of 80 at the Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka on Monday, November 2. His death, following a stroke, has been described by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and the national government as a major loss to the country’s sporting history.

Mwila was a pioneering figure who helped lay the foundation for Zambian football's international recognition. As a player, he represented the national team from 1965 to 1974, notably helping the squad win silver at the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations. He was among the first Zambians to play professionally abroad, featuring for the Atlanta Chiefs in the United States and Aston Villa in England.

His coaching career was equally distinguished, having led the national teams of both Zambia and Botswana. At the club level, he guided Power Dynamos to the 1991 African Cup Winners’ Cup title, the only continental club trophy won by a Zambian team to date. He also served as a FAZ life member and a member of the National Teams Technical Committee.
