Zambia political landscape faces major realignment ahead of August elections

Antonio Mwanza, leader of the Democratic Progress Party (DPP), has characterized the upcoming August 13 general elections in Zambia as highly unpredictable. Mwanza noted that the two main presidential contenders, President Hakainde Hichilema and Tonse Alliance candidate Brian Mundubile, face a competitive landscape where both must consolidate support to succeed.

Mwanza suggested that the growing traction of the Tonse Alliance serves as an "indictment on President Hakainde Sammy Hichilema," signaling widespread public dissatisfaction with the current United Party for National Development (UPND) government. He argued that historical voting patterns in Zambia show citizens often vote against the ruling party when frustrated with its performance.

The DPP leader predicted that the election results could lead to a significant political realignment, involving party defections and shifts in political structures. He warned that if the UPND loses, the party could face internal instability and a decline in influence similar to previous ruling parties.
