NRPUP withdraws from Tonse Alliance following Zambian elections

The National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) has officially withdrawn from the Tonse Alliance following the August 13 general elections in Zambia. NRPUP President Ezra Tembo announced the decision, stating that recent developments and concerns regarding political space and the safety of leaders made remaining in the coalition untenable. The party intends to operate independently, focusing on its role in Parliament after securing more than 60 seats.

In a related development, the NRPUP has demoted its former presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile. Party leadership clarified that Mundubile was a contracted candidate and that his alleged involvement with a militia group does not represent the party’s position. While some alliance members had previously suggested contesting the election results, Tembo has congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema and the United Party for National Development (UPND) on their victory.

Mark Simuuwe, a media director for the UPND, urged the opposition to use the constitutional court if they wish to challenge the election results. He also noted that the ruling party would contact international bodies, such as the EU, SADC, and AU, regarding reports of security forces arresting opposition members for possession of dangerous weapons.
