Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema Secures 2026 Nomination, Urges Peace

President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice‑President Mutale Nalumango have had their candidacies validated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia, confirming their run for the August 13, 2026 presidential election. Hichilema said he accepted the nomination with humility and pledged to continue a platform of unity, development and peace for the country.

During the same period, police in Lusaka arrested twelve individuals at the Civic Centre for conduct deemed likely to breach peace while mayoral nomination papers were being filed. The arrested persons were released on bond, and authorities urged the public to remain peaceful and follow lawful procedures during civic activities.

Both events highlight the emphasis on a calm electoral environment as Zambia prepares for its next general election.
