Zambia President Hichilema Praised as UNZA Students March to State House

University of Zambia (UNZA) students met President Hakainde Hichilema at State House in Lusaka, thanking the government for recent sanitation upgrades on campus and the reinstatement of meal allowances. Vice President Jemimah Mwaba highlighted the administration’s responsiveness, and Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi described the works as the most significant since the university’s founding in 1966.

Thousands of students then marched from Monk Square to State House, wearing white T‑shirts and carrying placards, to formally present appreciation and to lobby for an increase in the annual accommodation allowance from K4,800 to K5,800, citing rising living costs. The demonstration, occurring less than two weeks before the August 13 national election, has placed student welfare at the centre of the political conversation.
