Zambia presidential election faces fraud allegations and unrest

Zambia’s recent presidential election has faced intense scrutiny following allegations of fraud, violence, and irregularities. While President Hakainde Hichilema secured re-election with approximately 60 per cent of the vote, opposition candidate Brian Mundubile has rejected the results, citing voting irregularities and potential manipulation of results forms.

The electoral process was marked by significant unrest, including government raids and the arrest of 11 individuals, including senior opposition figures. The Zambian government characterized these actions as a national security necessity to prevent an armed insurrection. Meanwhile, the electoral commission briefly suspended the announcement of results due to violence against polling staff and the theft of ballot papers.

Academic analysis has highlighted discrepancies in the data, noting that in several constituencies, the number of votes cast for the presidency significantly exceeded the votes cast for parliamentary contests. Experts suggest these discrepancies are warning signs of manipulation and indicate that hundreds of thousands of votes may require explanation, potentially leading to calls for an election rerun.
