Zambia security raid kills former minister following election

A security raid on the residence of Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has resulted in the death of former cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya. Zambian police confirmed that Kafwaya was fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire between security forces and individuals at the scene.

Government authorities stated the operation targeted a suspected militia posing a threat to state security. During the raid, officials reported finding high-grade military weapons and arrested 11 individuals, including three former commandos. The Zambian government has not yet disclosed the specific charges or the location of the detainees.

The incident follows a contentious election in which President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner of a second term with approximately 60 percent of the vote. Mundubile, who received roughly 38 percent of the vote, has rejected the results, alleging serious irregularities and stating his alliance will challenge the outcome in court.

United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk expressed concern regarding the arrests, urging Zambian authorities to ensure all detentions are consistent with international human rights standards and that individuals are brought promptly before a court.
