Zambia suffers 3-1 defeat to Algeria in AFCON qualifier
Zambia’s Chipolopolo suffered a 3-1 defeat against Algeria in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium. Interim coach George Lwandamina attributed the loss to individual mistakes and injuries that forced tactical changes.
Despite conceding in the first minute, Zambia managed an equalizer through skipper Fashion Sakala in the 60th minute. However, a mistake by goalkeeper Willard Mwanza allowed Algeria to regain the lead. The match was further complicated when striker Patson Daka had to be replaced due to a suspected soft tissue injury.
Lwandamina praised the resilience of his young squad, which featured several European-based players making their debuts or gaining experience. The team now shifts its focus to an upcoming home fixture against Togo, which Lwandamina emphasized will be crucial for their qualification hopes.
