Zambian authorities condemn political chants at football stadiums
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts have issued warnings against the use of political slogans and chants at football stadiums. This follows an incident during a league match between Nkana FC and Makeni All Stars at Nkana Stadium on October 10, 2026.
FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya stated that the association’s stance is guided by continental and international regulations. He cited Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA statutes that prohibit political or religious messaging, banners, and symbols within or near stadiums to maintain the independence and neutrality of football management.
Zambian government officials, including Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe, condemned the conduct, noting that political activity in sports risks provoking rival groups and creating tension. The Ministry urged football clubs, the Zambia Premier League, and FAZ to take firm action to ensure stadiums remain safe, unifying spaces rather than platforms for political mobilization.
