Zambian High Court orders production of 18 political detainees
The Lusaka High Court, sitting as a three-judge bench, has issued a firm directive to the State and prison authorities to present 18 political detainees in court without fail. The order follows more than 62 days of detention for individuals facing treason-related allegations linked to the disputed national elections held on August 13.
Among those expected to appear are the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Brian Mundubile, lawyer Makebi Zulu, and Bishop Trevor Mwamba. The court warned that failure to produce the detainees would necessitate an explanation from prison authorities and could result in consequences.
The proceedings are viewed as a significant test of judicial authority and constitutional rights in Zambia, as critics have raised concerns regarding due process and the length of the detainees' imprisonment.
