Zambian lawmakers navigate political shifts and government cooperation

Zambian political figures are navigating relationships between independent mandates and government cooperation. Patrick Mucheleka, the MP for Luwingu Central, has returned to Parliament on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket following the 2026 general election. His return highlights a shift from his 2014 stance, where he served as an independent MP for Lubansenshi and refused to join the then-ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to honor his voters' mandate.

Similarly, Vincent Mwale, the MP for Chipangali, has pledged to support President Hakainde Hichilema’s growth agenda. Mwale, a former Patriotic Front MP and Cabinet minister under the Edgar Lungu administration, stated that his decision to work with the current government is driven by the need to prioritize national development and economic stability over partisan politics.
