Brian Mundubile charged with treason in Zambia

Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile and 17 others, including his running mate Makebi Zulu, have been formally charged with treason. The charges follow the disputed August 13 presidential election, in which incumbent Hakainde Hichilema secured 60% of the vote compared to Mundubile's 38%.

Authorities allege that Mundubile’s NRPUP party was planning an armed insurgency. During a security raid on a property linked to Mundubile in Lusaka, officials reported seizing weapons, including rifles, and noted the death of opposition MP Mutotwe Kafwaya. Mundubile and Zulu briefly sought refuge in a United Nations building before being detained following pressure from the presidency.

The political situation remains tense as Hichilema prepares for his second term. The opposition has been unable to legally challenge the election results because authorities closed the courts on the final day available for filing appeals. Amnesty International has characterized the recent arrests of opposition members as arbitrary.
