Zambian opposition leaders Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu charged with treason

Opposition leaders Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) have been formally charged with treason. The case has expanded to include 18 individuals, including businessman Valden Findlay and Patrick Mwansa.

The charges stem from a security operation on August 14, 2026, at Mundubile’s residence in Kabulonga, which resulted in the death of former Transport Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya. While police reported recovering military-grade weapons during the raid, Mundubile has disputed the state's account of the exchange of fire.

Lawyer Milner Katolo has called upon the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to intervene and facilitate an amicable settlement to help heal the nation. Katolo noted that while preliminary discussions have occurred involving the UN and religious bodies, no formal negotiations are currently underway between the defense and the state.
