Zambia's Hakainde Hichilema wins reelection amid controversy

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has been declared the winner of a second term with 60.94 percent of the vote, defeating opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who received 38.87 percent. The election has been overshadowed by significant controversy regarding the integrity of the democratic process.

Critics and international observers have raised concerns following the abrupt suspension of vote counting in several regions. The European Union noted serious irregularities and procedural issues during the counting and evaluation phases that impact the transparency and credibility of the results. Similarly, the Commonwealth expressed dismay over the post-election period, calling for an end to arbitrary arrests and the release of political detainees.

The government, led by the United Party for National Development (UPND), has rejected these criticisms, asserting that Zambia is a sovereign state with functioning constitutional bodies responsible for national security. Meanwhile, the opposition, including the National Development Party (NDC), has alleged widespread fraud and demanded an independent investigation into the detention of several opposition members.
