Zamboï gold mine collapse causes mass casualties in Central African Republic

A major collapse at an artisanal gold mine in Zamboï, located in western Central African Republic, has resulted in significant loss of life. While official government figures initially reported 49 deaths following the August 18 incident, local sources suggest the death toll may exceed hundreds.

The disaster highlights the dangerous conditions of unregulated mining in the region. Father Marcello Bartolomei, a missionary and vicar general in the diocese of Bouar, noted that seasonal heavy rains and a total lack of safety infrastructure likely contributed to the collapse. He emphasized that the tragedy reflects a broader lack of oversight and a disregard for human dignity in the gold extraction sector.

Reports indicate that the Zamboï area is part of a complex and often illegal supply chain. A United Nations report previously documented networks of illicit gold extraction and trafficking in the area involving foreign intermediaries and armed elements from the 3R rebel movement. The rising global price of gold has intensified the economic incentive for such informal and high-risk mining activities.
