Zamboye gold mine collapse leaves dozens dead and local economy in crisis

An artisanal gold mine in Zamboye, located in the Nana-Mambéré prefecture of the Central African Republic, remains closed following a deadly landslide on August 18, 2026. The Central African Republic Ministry of Mines reported a provisional death toll of 49 people, including 34 Central Africans, 13 Cameroonians, and 2 Chadians. The incident occurred at a site owned by the company Douakouzou.

Heavy rains are believed to have destabilized the ground, leading to a secondary collapse that trapped workers in muddy areas. While the site was officially closed following the disaster, reports indicate that economic pressure and informal networks have led some workers to return to the pits despite prohibitions.

The closure of the mine has caused significant economic hardship for the local village, which relies heavily on the mining industry for survival. The shutdown has halted the livelihoods of families, traders, and intermediaries who depend on the site's activity.
