Zamfara Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni escapes attack by angry youths
The Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mani Mummuni, narrowly escaped a violent confrontation with hundreds of angry youths in the Gwashi community of Bukkuyum Local Government Area on Sunday.
Mummuni had traveled to the community to commiserate with residents following a recent bandit attack that reportedly killed several civilians and at least nine security personnel. Upon his arrival, residents blocked the entrance to the town and chanted “Bamayi,” a Hausa expression meaning “We don’t want you.”
The protesters expressed deep grievances regarding alleged government neglect, accusing state authorities of failing to protect the community during the initial attacks and only offering sympathy after the violence had passed. The situation escalated as youths pelted vehicles in the deputy governor’s entourage with stones. Mummuni and his security aides were forced to take cover and were eventually whisked away by security personnel to ensure their safety. Normalcy has since returned to the area, though no official statement has been released by the Zamfara state government.
