Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal rejects ransom payments and flags off road project
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has reaffirmed his policy of refusing ransom payments to kidnappers, stating that such payments only empower criminal groups. Lawal disclosed that he maintained this stance even after his brothers, Yusuf and Amba, were abducted in 2025, refusing to meet a reduced demand for a ₦150,000 recharge card.
To combat insecurity, the Governor highlighted the deployment of approximately 3,000 Community Protection Guards, trained alongside the military and police, to support conventional security forces. He also noted that the state is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser on a safe-corridor programme to reintegrate repentant bandits who surrender their weapons.
Additionally, Lawal has launched a 95km road construction project in the Tsafe Local Government Area to improve security response times and economic activity. The project is being executed in two phases by SKY Construction Company and Setraco Construction Company Limited, aiming to connect agricultural communities and address infrastructure deficits.
