Zamfara State: 17 killed in gang attack on gold mine

An armed gang attack in Nigeria's Zamfara State has left 17 people dead, including 12 soldiers and five miners. The incident occurred near the village of Bintin in the Maru region.

According to local officials and sources, the violence began when dozens of gunmen on motorcycles raided an illegal gold mine. The attackers are believed to belong to a gang led by Guska Dankarami. The raid reportedly served as retaliation after miners disarmed and killed a gang member who had been attempting to extort gold from them.

Following the initial raid on the mine, the gunmen moved toward the village and engaged in a firefight with military personnel. Local resident Lawan Wanzam noted that while the community had previously reached a truce with Dankarami, his men have continued to harass locals for gold. The Nigerian army has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
