Zamfara State launches committee for disarmament and peacebuilding
The Zamfara State Government has inaugurated a Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR), Peace and Security Committee to bolster peacebuilding efforts. Chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Nakwada, the committee aims to pursue reconciliation through a structured framework that aligns with national security operations while ensuring justice and accountability.
Nakwada emphasized that the process must prioritize victims to ensure sustainable peace, proposing the establishment of a Zamfara victims’ support fund. This fund would provide assistance for rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and livelihood restoration. Following the inauguration, officials inspected the Operation Safe Corridor DDR camp in Tsafe, a multi-billion-naira facility funded by the state.
Concurrently, the Dauda Lawal Engagement and Sensitization Forum reported improvements in regional security and infrastructure. The group noted that increased synergy between security agencies and local protection guards has led to safer highways and the reopening of major markets. Additionally, the forum highlighted significant rehabilitations of healthcare facilities, including the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and various primary healthcare centers across the state.
