Zamfara State schools to resume classes following diphtheria improvement

Schools in Zamfara State are scheduled to resume academic activities on Monday, September 28, 2026. The reopening follows a two-week delay implemented after health authorities advised that additional time was necessary to strengthen the response to a diphtheria outbreak.

The directive, issued by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Gajam, applies to all public and private institutions, including Islamic and Qur’anic education centres. The decision comes after the Ministry of Health reported an improvement in the diphtheria situation.

While schools are reopening, authorities have emphasized that vigilance must continue. Schools have been instructed to monitor students and staff for symptoms, designate focal persons for health reporting, and cooperate with planned preventive vaccination campaigns. Recommended hygiene measures include regular handwashing, respiratory hygiene, and ensuring adequate classroom ventilation to prevent further transmission.
