Zamioculcas zamiifolia: The resilient ZZ plant
The Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ plant, is a highly resilient indoor plant noted for its ability to thrive in low-light environments and survive extended periods without water.
Native to East Africa, specifically regions including Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar, the plant has evolved to withstand alternating seasons of intense rain and prolonged drought. This adaptation is facilitated by fleshy underground rhizomes that act as water and nutrient reservoirs. These structures allow the plant to survive for several weeks without irrigation in temperate indoor settings.
Key characteristics include thick, upright stems and glossy, oval-shaped leaves that grow in pairs. While the plant is highly tolerant of shade and infrequent watering, it is sensitive to overwatering. Excessive moisture can lead to yellowing leaves and soft stems, particularly if the plant is kept in containers without drainage.
