ZAMMSA staff separated following forensic audit findings
The Zambian government has initiated a complete reset of the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) by separating all institutional staff in the national interest. This decision follows a forensic audit commissioned by the Office of the Auditor General, which revealed systemic failures across the agency’s supply chain.
According to Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi, the audit uncovered widespread weaknesses in procurement, warehousing, and distribution. Specific findings included irregular procurements at inflated prices, unaccounted-for stock, missing system records, and the diversion of medicines intended for public health facilities.
The agency described the move as an administrative and precautionary step to safeguard its integrity, operational efficiency, and reputation, noting that it does not constitute a disciplinary finding. Separated employees have been informed they may re-apply for positions once the agency advertises for a new, leaner structure.
To prevent disruptions in the national medicine supply, an interim management team has been established. The Ministry of Health intends to work with logistics providers and cooperating partners to maintain distribution while working to install new management as soon as possible.
