Zamora faces labor market decline and investment push
The labor market in Zamora is experiencing a significant decline in the active population. According to data from the third quarter of 2026 analyzed by the CCOO union, the province has seen a 3.39% decrease in active persons, totaling 2,693 fewer individuals compared to the previous year. The inactive population has risen by 5.86%, or 3,965 people.
Specific sectors are facing notable contractions. Public sector employment has dropped by 14.16% year-on-year, representing a loss of 2,246 jobs. Additionally, self-employed work has seen a sharp decline of 18.12%. The union suggests these trends reflect an aging population and a lack of structural job creation, leading to emigration and inactivity.
In response to regional challenges, the 'Zamora Destino Vital' project has been launched. This initiative, a collaboration between the Provincial Council, the Chamber of Commerce, and CEOE Zamora, aims to attract investors, entrepreneurs, and new residents. Proponents highlight the province's affordable housing and strategic potential in sectors such as the Silver Economy, tourism, and the agri-food industry.
