Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings assumes Ghana Environment Ministry

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has officially assumed office as Ghana’s Minister of Environment, Science and Technology. She took over the portfolio from Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who had been serving in a caretaker capacity following the death of the previous minister, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in an August 2025 helicopter crash.

During the handover, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings called for increased discipline, transparency, and stakeholder collaboration to address environmental degradation and climate change. She emphasized that environmental protection is a shared responsibility involving government, civil society, and the private sector.

In related environmental news, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah reported significant progress in the fight against illegal mining. Under Operation Watershed, a joint effort involving the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and Navy Special Forces, authorities have cleared the Ankobra River of approximately 3,000 changfan machines and other makeshift equipment. The operation has also resulted in over 237 arrests, including 144 foreign nationals.
