ZANU PF Harare Province endorses Mnangagwa and seeks congress postponement

ZANU PF provincial structures in Harare have passed resolutions to postpone the party’s next National People’s Congress from 2027 to 2030. The move aims to align the party’s constitution with Zimbabwe’s new seven-year electoral cycle following Constitutional Amendment No. 3.

In addition to the postponement, Harare Province has formally endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain both President and First Secretary of ZANU PF. Provincial chairman Godwills Masimirembwa stated that Mnangagwa will be the province’s nominee for party leader at the proposed 2030 congress.

These developments occur amid intense speculation regarding a leadership succession battle within the ruling party. Analysts suggest the decision to delay the congress and endorse Mnangagwa may serve to limit the political ambitions of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga by removing the possibility of an earlier leadership contest.
