Zanzibar and Indonesia promote cultural heritage for economic growth
Government officials in Zanzibar and Indonesia are emphasizing the strategic importance of cultural heritage and the creative economy to drive national development and soft power.
In Zanzibar, Minister for Information, Arts, Culture and Sports Dr. Riziki Pembe Juma has called for the protection of the islands’ cultural identity through modern preservation methods. During the launch of the 31st Zanzibar Cultural Festival week, she highlighted the economic potential of the arts, stating that the sector should be viewed as a source of employment and income rather than just entertainment. She urged artists to innovate to meet market demands and directed officials to ensure veteran artists receive their entitled royalties.
In Indonesia, Culture Minister Fadli Zon is working to transform the nation's cultural wealth into a source of national soft power. Following the establishment of a dedicated Culture Ministry under President Prabowo Subianto, the government is focusing on heritage protection and the development of a sustainable arts ecosystem. Key initiatives include the National Talent Management program, the revitalization of historical sites, and efforts to nominate specific cultural elements, such as tempe culture and Makyong Theater, for UNESCO recognition.
