Zaporizhzhia hit by Russian strikes killing 20 after diesel sanctions lifted

A massive Russian aerial bombardment of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday killed at least 20 people, including three children, and wounded approximately 18 others. The attack involved the use of five glide bombs targeting residential buildings and apartment complexes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the strike as a direct response to the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports. Zelenskyy stated that Moscow is interpreting the easing of pressure as a signal that it can continue its military operations.

The Zaporizhzhia incident follows a week of intense violence in Ukraine. Earlier in the week, Russian strikes in Kramatorsk and Pryluky killed nearly 80 civilians. Additionally, a missile strike in Kyiv on Saturday wounded seven people. While a Ukrainian delegation was in Miami discussing potential peace proposals, the Trump administration announced the diesel sanction agreement, a move that has caused significant tension in Kyiv.
