Zaporizhzhia faces potential Russian infantry incursions this winter
Dmytro Filatov, commander of Ukraine’s 1st Separate Assault Regiment, warned that small Russian infantry groups could potentially reach Zaporizhzhia during the upcoming winter. Filatov noted that while large-scale troop movements might not occur immediately, the infiltration of isolated groups could have significant psychological impacts on Ukraine’s international partners.
Potential avenues for Russian advancement include the Stepnohirske area and the southern bank of the Dnipro River, where dense residential developments could facilitate infiltration. Analysts suggest that controlling high ground near Stepnohirske or bypassing obstacles via Yuliivka to reach the H-08 highway could serve as strategic pathways for Russian forces.
While combat intensity in the Zaporizhzhia sector has recently seen a decrease, Filatov indicated that Russia may be attempting to shift Ukrainian attention toward the Donbas and Kramatorsk regions. This strategy aims to force Kyiv to redeploy troops from other sectors of the front line.
