Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant ceasefire announced for power line repairs
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced a localized, temporary ceasefire near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The truce was negotiated to allow technicians to repair the Ferosplavna-1, a 330-kilovolt power transmission line that was disconnected on August 20 due to military activity.
Since the loss of external power, the facility has relied on emergency diesel generators to cool its six reactors and spent fuel pools. The IAEA warned that the plant faces a risk of a total blackout within days as diesel fuel reserves are depleting. Repairs are expected to begin once the area has been cleared of mines.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted that both Russia and Ukraine have cooperated constructively to facilitate this seventh localized ceasefire aimed at preventing a nuclear accident. The agency will supervise the repair operations during the truce.
