Zaporizhzhya NPP staff targeted in drone attack near bus stop
A drone explosion at a bus stop used by staff of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has resulted in at least one death and up to 17 injuries. The incident occurred around 06:00 local time in Energodar, targeting employees and subcontractors.
The director of the plant described the event as the ‘worst incident the plant has ever experienced.’ While the explosion caused casualties among personnel, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that no damage was sustained by the nuclear reactors or critical infrastructure.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that such attacks pose a ‘grave risk to nuclear safety’ and called for an immediate end to actions targeting nuclear facilities or their personnel. The ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear plant, has been under Russian control since March 2022 and remains a site of significant tension due to its proximity to the front lines.
