Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant faces critical power shortages

The power supply at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) remains in a precarious state, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reported that the facility has been without external electricity for more than a week, forcing it to rely on emergency diesel generators.

While several dozen tons of diesel were recently delivered from outside the site, the plant faces a potential total power failure within approximately ten days if external electricity is not restored or additional fuel is not provided. The reactors are currently shut down but require continuous cooling.

The IAEA is attempting to establish a localized ceasefire zone to facilitate repairs on a critical power line. Restoring this line would re-establish the external power supply necessary for nuclear safety. The ZNPP is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and has been under Russian control since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
