Zara Tindall reflects on equestrian upbringing and parenting

Zara Tindall has shared reflections on her upbringing and parenting style during an appearance on the ‘Talk Horse’ podcast. The Olympic silver medalist discussed the disciplined environment provided by her parents, Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, noting that they required her to earn her success in the equestrian world through hard work and personal responsibility.

Tindall described her father, Olympic gold medalist Mark Phillips, as a ‘tough’ coach who was difficult to impress. She recalled that her parents insisted she do things properly without special assistance, including manual tasks like cleaning tack and mucking out stables. While she noted that Princess Anne was more relaxed, she emphasized the discipline instilled by her parents.

Reflecting on her own role as a parent, Tindall mentioned that her 12-year-old daughter, Mia Tindall, recently participated in her first Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials. She noted that her daughter has exhibited typical pre-teen behaviors, such as eye-rolling, and expressed her intention to avoid being as strict a taskmaster as her father was during her own training.
