Zaragoza and O Barco municipalities expand local swimming‑pool initiatives

The Zaragoza City Council filled all 500 places for its summer water‑gymnastics programme for seniors, offering free classes in 15 municipal pools across twelve districts and three rural neighbourhoods. The initiative, aimed at residents aged 60 and over, attracted an average participant age of 69, 86% of whom were women, and is part of the city’s active‑ageing and anti‑loneliness policy.

In the town of O Barco de Valdeorras, mayor Aurentino Alonso presented a proposal to add 400 m² of green space to the municipal pool complex and improve shade and maintenance. The motion was rejected by the socialist council, which also turned down a separate BNG proposal on water‑supply assistance. During the debate the mayor commented, “os veciños teñen dereito a xestionar as súas augas”. The council continues to manage the pool facilities, which also include a river beach.

Both projects illustrate how Spanish local authorities are using municipal swimming‑pool facilities to address community health, recreation and environmental concerns.
