Zaragoza chosen as seat of Spain's State Public Health Agency
The Spanish government announced that Zaragoza will host the new Agencia Estatal de Salud Pública (AESAP). Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the decision at a Council of Ministers meeting, explaining that it is part of a broader decentralisation policy. Eight cities competed for the seat – Zaragoza, Toledo, Granada, Murcia, Barcelona, León, Oviedo and Lugo – and the Ministry of Health evaluated them against criteria such as transport connectivity, unemployment rates, facility suitability and overall technical capacity. Zaragoza obtained the highest score, while candidates like Lugo were rejected for lacking an airport and high‑speed rail links, and Toledo for offering an unfinished building. The selection has drawn mixed reactions: business groups in Granada and the city’s mayor expressed disappointment; Oviedo’s mayor Alfredo Canteli called the outcome a "total shame"; Lugo’s council complained of political bias; and the Sociedad Española de Epidemiología praised the move but urged sufficient budget, staff and autonomy. The agency is expected to receive a total investment of €60 million, including €20 million from the Aragon regional government to adapt the Expo pavilion, and to start with about 60 employees, scaling up to roughly 300 staff. Its mandate is to strengthen public‑health coordination and improve Spain’s response to future health crises.
