Zavala road accident kills 24 in Mozambique

A fatal head-on collision on the EN1 highway in the Zavala district of Inhambane province has resulted in the deaths of 24 people. The accident occurred on the night of September 17, involving a Toyota Quantum passenger vehicle and a MAN Diesel truck belonging to the Mozambican Armed Forces.

The passenger vehicle was traveling from Sofala toward South Africa and was reportedly carrying 24 people, despite having a legal capacity of only 15. The two military personnel in the truck survived the collision with minor injuries.

In response to the tragedy, the Mozambique Police of the Republic (PRM) has suspended officers stationed at six road inspection posts along the EN1 between the Save River and the Inharrime weighbridge. Authorities are investigating how the overcrowded vehicle passed through multiple checkpoints without being stopped. The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has also established an inquiry team to determine responsibilities and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
