Zavodovski Island penguin colony suffers massive decline
Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey have discovered a massive decline in the chinstrap penguin population on Zavodovski Island, a volcanic outcrop in the South Sandwich Islands. Once home to the world’s largest penguin colony in 2011, the island has seen the loss of more than half a million chinstrap penguins.
According to findings published in the journal Current Biology, the number of occupied chinstrap penguin nests fell by 63% between 2011 and 2025. Lead researcher and penguin ecologist Norman Ratcliffe described the event as ‘the biggest change in community composition ever observed at a single location in Antarctica.’
Scientists have linked this significant population drop to human-driven climate change, noting that the chinstrap penguins are providing a clear signal of the impacts of global warming.
