Zavodovski Island penguin colony suffers rapid population collapse

chinstrap penguins Zavodovski Island population collapse climate change Antarctic krill

The chinstrap penguin population on Zavodovski Island has experienced a dramatic collapse, losing its status as the world’s largest penguin colony. Research from the British Antarctic Survey indicates that the number of breeding individuals fell from approximately 1.09 million in 2011 to 402,000 in 2025, representing a nearly 63% decline at an annual rate of 7%.

Researchers attribute this rapid decline to human-driven climate change affecting ocean food webs. Rising ocean temperatures have caused Antarctic krill, the primary food source for chinstrap penguins, to migrate further south into colder waters. This forces the penguins to either move to unsuitable habitats or face starvation.

The title of the world’s largest penguin colony has shifted to the Adélie penguin colony at Cape Adare, which was estimated to exceed one million birds as of 2018.
