Zaza Dam reaches 30% capacity in Cuba following recent rains
The Zaza Dam in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, has reached 30% capacity following recent rainfall, rising from 21% at the start of September. While the reservoir gained approximately 87 million cubic meters in the last 30 days, officials note that the levels remain significantly below historical norms. Dixan Ravelo, a hydraulic resources delegate, stated that during typical years, the dam would have accumulated between 800 and 900 million cubic meters by this time.
The recent precipitation was concentrated in the southern part of the province, meaning the entire catchment area did not receive uniform rainfall. The current water volume will be a critical factor in evaluating the upcoming agricultural campaign in November, particularly for rice cultivation. While the current levels allow for planning, officials cautioned that water availability is not yet guaranteed for all projected agricultural needs.
