Zbigniew Ziobro investigation: Prosecutors probe assistance in U.S. flight
The Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the flight of former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro to the United States. The probe, initiated following a notification by attorney Roman Giertych in May, is examining whether Tomasz Sakiewicz, head of TV Republika, and MEP Adam Bielan provided logistical, financial, or organizational assistance to help Ziobro evade arrest and avoid criminal responsibility.
Investigators are specifically looking into whether Ziobro's status as a foreign media correspondent was used as a cover to facilitate his departure and stay in the U.S. via a journalist visa. Additionally, prosecutors are reviewing allegations of the creation of false documents to secure this status. Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka emphasized that “no one is above the law” and that the roles of those involved must be clarified.
Ziobro, who is facing 26 charges related to irregularities in the Justice Fund, previously resided in Hungary, but his political asylum there was revoked by the new government in July. The investigation is ongoing and includes the examination of testimonies from several high-profile political figures.
