Zcash and privacy coins rise amid global PHP security warnings

Zcash (ZEC) saw a significant price increase, reaching a 14-day high of approximately $1,368 on October 21. This surge occurred as the broader privacy coin sector's market capitalization rose by 5.4% to roughly $34.8 billion, driven by heightened interest in privacy-focused assets following global cybersecurity warnings.

Security agencies, including the US National Security Agency (NSA), the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and various European institutions, issued urgent alerts regarding critical vulnerabilities in PHP (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619). These flaws could allow unauthorized remote code execution or access to sensitive memory data. In response, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged website operators to verify their use of PHP and prepare for patches or temporary offline status. Several Japanese services and financial institutions, including Shizuoka Bank and Mizuho Bank, implemented emergency maintenance or service suspensions as precautionary measures.

Additionally, Zcash's growth is supported by progress toward the Network Upgrade 7 (NU7). Developers have proposed a mainnet activation block height of 3,543,405, aiming to reduce target block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds to accelerate transaction speeds.
