Zcash developer Zakura releases Common to accelerate privacy transactions
The Zcash development team, via Zakura, has released Zakura Common, an open-source cryptography and protocol library designed to significantly accelerate network operations. The update focuses on optimizing zero-knowledge proof generation, which is a critical component for privacy-preserving transactions.
Key performance improvements include a more than 14-fold increase in proof generation speed on mobile devices and a more than five-fold increase on desktops. Additionally, Sinsemilla hashing is reported to be over 21 times faster, trial decryption is 1.5 times faster, and zk-SNARK verification has improved by 4 to 8 times. These optimizations aim to reduce the time required to create a private transaction from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in many cases.
Crucially, the upgrade does not require a Zcash network hard fork, allowing wallet developers to implement the libraries immediately on the existing network. The release is intended to benefit both shielded wallets and full nodes, facilitating faster transaction propagation and reduced orphan blocks. This technical milestone is viewed as a foundational step toward Project Tachyon, which seeks to scale Zcash's privacy transaction throughput to 50,000 transactions per second.
