Zcash faces debate over development fund extension beyond 2028
Debate is intensifying within the Zcash ecosystem regarding the future of its development fund, which is currently scheduled to expire in 2028. Cryptocurrency venture capitalists hold opposing views on whether the fund should be extended.
Hashib Kurishi, a managing partner at Dragonfly Capital, argues against an extension. He suggests that the current fund and related assets, valued at approximately $95 million, are sufficient to support remaining major development tasks. Kurishi expressed concerns that a growing fund could lead to political conflicts over resource allocation and increase dependency on specific organizations.
Conversely, Matt Huang, co-founder of Paradigm, advocates for maintaining the fund. He emphasizes the need for continuous investment in research and development to defend against increasingly sophisticated AI-driven cyberattacks and the emergence of quantum computing. Given Zcash’s reliance on zero-knowledge proof technology, maintaining high security standards through ongoing cryptographic research is critical.
Proposed governance models to manage the fund include direct voting by token holders to increase transparency, or the establishment of a specialized committee to ensure professional oversight. A hybrid model, combining community budget decisions with expert technical reviews, has also been suggested as a potential solution.
