Zcash Ironwood Upgrade May Be Delayed Over Infrastructure Migration Issues

Zcash plans to activate the Ironwood network upgrade in late July. Shielded Labs, the organization overseeing the upgrade, has warned that exchanges, mining pools and wallet providers may not have sufficient time to complete the simultaneous migration to the new Z3 stack – comprising Zebra for node operation, Zaino for blockchain data delivery and Zallet for wallet functions – while also preparing for Ironwood.

Ironwood is intended to replace the Orchard shielded pool and introduce an accounting checkpoint that will allow verification of the shielded circulating supply after a previously discovered "infinity" bug could have enabled unlimited counterfeit ZEC tokens. The migration away from the legacy zcashd software to the Z3 stack is still in development; Zallet and Zaino are not yet production‑ready. No formal delay has been announced, but developers continue security reviews and system verification, and a postponement could affect confidence in ZEC and market volatility.

The situation underscores the challenge of coordinating large‑scale protocol upgrades with major infrastructure changes in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
