Zcash marks 10th anniversary with unique developer funding model
Zcash is celebrating its tenth anniversary on October 28, marking a decade of technical evolution for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency. A central theme of its longevity is its unique economic model, which differs from Bitcoin by allocating 20% of block rewards to ecosystem development and research. Under this structure, miners receive 80% of rewards, while the remaining 20% is split between Zcash Community Grants (8%) and a coinholder-directed funding mechanism (12%).
Grayscale, a digital asset manager, has credited this built-in funding as a primary driver for the network’s ability to maintain continuous research and development through various market cycles. This sustained investment has facilitated major protocol upgrades, including the Sprout, Sapling, and Orchard shielded pools, as well as the recent Ironwood upgrade, which introduced formally verified supply protections and quantum-recoverable addresses.
As the network enters its next decade, it faces both opportunities and internal debates. While the launch of a Zcash ETF has increased institutional interest, a new proposal from co-founder Sean Bowe suggests restructuring the current grant system to enhance long-term sustainability. Looking forward, the project aims to address emerging security risks posed by quantum computing and artificial intelligence.
