Zcash hits $1,000 milestone amid ETF launch and short squeeze

Zcash (ZEC) has achieved a major milestone, with its price surpassing $1,000 for the first time in eight years. The rally, which saw the token climb approximately 20% in a single 24-hour period, was significantly accelerated by a massive short squeeze. Market data indicates that roughly $34.5 million in bearish leveraged positions were liquidated, providing the momentum necessary to push the asset to intraday highs near $1,029.

Institutional interest has played a central role in this price discovery. Grayscale's recent conversion of its Zcash Trust into a spot ETF (ticker: ZCSH), which began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25, has provided a regulated avenue for investors to gain exposure to the privacy-focused protocol. Since its launch, the ZCSH ETF has attracted approximately $34.4 million in net inflows.

Beyond institutional access, the Zcash network is seeing increased fundamental activity. The network hashrate has surged toward record levels, reaching approximately 27.9 GSol/s in late August, driven by improved mining profitability. Additionally, on-chain metrics show that the shielded supply—the portion of ZEC held in privacy-preserving addresses—has grown to approximately 4.86 million ZEC, representing about 29% of the total supply.
