Zdeno Chara avoids blame after bicycle collision with runner in Beluša, Slovakia

Former NHL defenseman Zdeno Chára was involved in a bicycle collision on a popular cycle path near the Slovak village of Beluša. A 56‑year‑old runner wearing headphones entered the cyclist’s lane, leaving Chára unable to avoid the impact. Both parties were tested for alcohol, with negative results, and emergency services were called at Chára’s urging. The runner was taken to a hospital for precautionary examination but is reported to be out of life‑threatening danger. Police concluded the runner, who should not have been on the cycle path and changed direction abruptly, was at fault, and no criminal investigation was pursued. Chára said, “I am in contact with the runner’s family. The priority is for him to return to normal life in full health.”
