ZDF Director criticizes Jan Böhmermann's satire as 'too fanatic

ZDF Director Norbert Himmler has issued a sharp critique of satirist Jan Böhmermann and his program ‘ZDF Magazin Royale’ in an interview with the newspaper ‘Die Zeit’. Himmler described the show as having potentially become ‘too fanatic’ in its recent iterations, noting that while the format previously delivered ‘grandiose shows’ that won prestigious awards, it has since lost its edge.

A specific point of contention cited by Himmler was a 2023 segment focusing on a bee breeder, which he labeled ‘disproportionate’. He argued that while satire should address those in power or expose systemic issues, it should not be unfair to individuals. This follows a legal dispute involving the beekeeper that was ultimately decided in the individual's favor.

Regarding the upcoming conclusion of ‘ZDF Magazin Royale’ on December 18, Himmler confirmed that the decision to end the show after six years was made by Böhmermann himself. The director noted that discussions regarding the evolution of the format had been ongoing for years, but emphasized that the satirist took the initiative to end the program to pursue new creative directions.
